Koriander Seeds/Coriander/Coriandrum sativum

The history of Coriander crosses several continents and a number of centuries. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician recommended the use of Coriander in medicine. Pliny mentioned that the highest qualitiy Coriander tob e found in Italy was that which was grown in Egypt. Coriander seeds appear to have been quite prized by the Ancient Egyptians as they have been found in tombs oft he 21st dynasty.

Coriander is used for digestion problems including upset stomach, loss of appetite, hernia, nausea, diarrhea, bowel spasm and intestinal gas. It is also used to treat measles, hemorrhoids, toothaches, worms and joint pains. It is also used for infections caused by bacteria and fungus.

Some breast-feeding woman use Coriander to increase milk flow; in foods, coriander is used as a culinary spice and to prevent food poisoning. In manufacturing, Coriander is used as a flavoring agent in medicines and tobacco, and as a fragrance in cosmetics and soaps.
